Bringing up kids in Hip Hop has been good coz our kids are just as much into it as we are. Their friends think it's dope how they have parents who are into the things they are into so that sense it's been really good.
It gets hard when we start getting busy with doing shows and running events coz it means finding baby sitters for the kids if we can't take them along with us. We like the kids to be with us in everything that we do but quite often there isn't enough room for them to come along or it means them having to miss school.
Our kids including our youngest Jeremiah are all into bboying and bgirling. Jahnelle is just starting out and picks up things really fast while Khan has been doing it now for over a year, he practises with us and joins in for the odd show and battles with us.
Jeremiah already knows how to battle, he's taken out kids who are much older than him. He's only young and not at the age yet where we can show him how to do a move so everything he does is from what he has seen people do so he just tries to pick it up himself. He's already appeared on What Now, a New Zealand kids TV show and was called back to the show where he was to battle against a TV celebrity..... unfortunately he ended up getting "camera shock" and if you watched it, you will have seen me in the back trying to persuade him to get on with the old "Mummy will buy you some lollies" line..... lol....
Having a family that loves hip hop has definitely been an experience, it's something that we all enjoy alot. We try to teach our kids about the important aspects of Hip Hop hoping that they'll grow up and have those values and knowledge instilled in them, at the same time it isn't something that we pressure them with, they do what they love and we do what we love..... it just happens that we all love the same things!
